Mastodon App: The Decentralized Social Network Explained

Advertising and subscription fees have become so well ingrained into global awareness that it’s easy to become suspicious when an app or service is labeled as free. Mastodon is largely ad-free and there are no subscription fees for users. That said, there are still operating expenses. Ongoing development costs have to be covered unless developers donate their time. Storing text, photos, and videos for millions of users can get expensive, and internet connectivity fees for transferring terabytes of data can quickly add up.
This is where a decentralized system comes into play. Each server takes care of its own costs. In many cases, the money required to run a server is crowd-funded by its members. Mastodon, as a decentralized social network, can’t go bankrupt, can’t be sold, and can’t be blocked by governments because of its distributed nature, and that’s part of what makes it so unique.
