Apple Is Improving The Selfie Camera, Here’s How

Per the source, a Chinese parts supplier and the Japanese electronics manufacturer, Sharp, were Apple’s initial supply chain partners. While Apple ditched the former in favor of the South Korean giant, LG Innotek, it is still retaining its partnership with Sharp. Apparently, Apple previously planned to partner with LG for the iPhone 15’s selfie camera but moved the timeline forward, according to the report. This is in line with a recent suggestion by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that a big specification upgrade for the upcoming iPhone 14 selfie camera was coming.

The analyst also claimed that Apple will likely equip all the upcoming iPhone 14 models with autofocus and a relatively larger ƒ/1.9 aperture. Such an upgrade would enhance the depth-of-field in photos taken with the iPhone 14’s front-facing camera. A better depth-of-field will significantly improve the portrait mode in selfies and autofocus could markedly boost the quality of FaceTime and other video calls. The larger aperture would make it easy for more light to pass through the iPhone lens, enabling it to take better quality shots overall.

The report argues that Apple’s partnership with LG Innotek is also likely to benefit the local parts manufacturing industry in the region as well. LG Innotek has began in-house manufacturing of important camera components which it earlier used to only assemble. Furthermore, Jahwa electronics is seemingly another South Korean electronic parts manufacturer that’ll likely supply Apple with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) modules. In another recent report, it was claimed that Apple is looking to ramp up production outside of China to help alleviate any potential supply chain issues.
